Sleeveless curcuma blouse: Hack no. 2

Curcuma Blusen Hack by Tilia Patterns

Already while drawing the pattern I had this hack in mind: The curcuma blouse in a sleeveless version! And in combination with the skirt Salvia the two of them form a wonderful summery ensemble!

But, does a sleeveless blouse even need a hack? Can’t you just leave the sleeves off “et voila”?! Of course you could do it that way, but the chance is high that you won’t be completely thrilled with the fit.

One important point concerns the armhole. In a pattern with sleeves, the armhole must be wide enough for you to have a comfortable freedom of movement at the sleeve. However, you do not need this for a sleeveless blouse, and you will almost certainly want to avoid involuntary insights.

I also prefer my summer blouses a little narrower from the width. Therefore I have made the following changes.

Changes for a sleeveless curcuma blouse

To draw the blouse a little narrower, I removed 2 centimeters at the side seams. I did this for the front as well as the back. In this way I reduced the width by a total of 8 centimeters.

To reduce the armhole, I went up 3 centimeters at the top of the side seam, at the new side line that I have just drawn. So I simply traced the arm curve 3 centimeters higher and then let the new armhole line run back into the old line.

Sewing instructions sleeveless blouse

  1. Decide where you want to have the slit opening, on the front or back, cut a slit in to the fabric and sew a bias tape to the slit according to the pattern instructions.

2. Close the side seams and finish them.

3. Cut a 3.5 centimeter wide bias tape. The length should be slightly longer than your armhole. Iron the bias tape in the middle. Then pin the folded bias tape right sides together to the blouse.

4. Sew the bias tape from the right with 0.7 cm seam allowance to the armhole.

5. Fold the bias tape completely to the left side of the blouse. Then topstitch the bias tape to the blouse. I learned this technique from my teacher Antonia in the pattern drafting course. This technique is easier and quicker than sewing the bias binding on when it is open. Nevertheless this method convinces with a clean result.

6. To finish the blouse you can now follow the official instructions in the pattern again, or in other words, you now sew the collar and ruffle and hem the blouse.

Now all you have to do is sew a matching salvia skirt and you have your ultimate summer outfit! Then you grab a favorite person and you ride together into the sunset; if you are not so fond of horses, you can also sit on the terrace and enjoy a cocktail. The main thing is that you have fun!
