First Day Dress with Peter Pan Collar Tutorial

I’ve got the pleasure of showing you our First Day Dress in action today. Last spring, my sewing buddy Bettina (aka Miss Stahlarbeit) and I came up with the idea of sewing the same dress for our girls. A while ago we bought Cotton + Steel fabrics from the same collection designed by Melody Miller. This fantastic print calls for a plain and simple dress, like the First Day Dress by Dana from Made Everyday. Heute zeige ich euch unser First Day Dress, ein Schnitt aus dem Hause Made Everyday. Ein Schnitt, den ich ohne meine Näh-Freundin Bettina aka Frau Stahlarbeit wahrscheinlich nicht genäht hätte. Ich fand ihn im ersten Moment etwas zu schlicht und simpel vom Stil her. Doch wir hatten gemeinsam diese Wahnsinnsstoffe gekauft von cotton + steel. Um die grossflächigen Retro-Motive von Melody Miller richtig zur Geltung zu bringen, braucht es meiner Meinung nach eine klare ruhige Schnittführung, genau so wie es das First Day Dress mit sich bringt. I’ve chosen to sew up the A-line dress with the cap sleeve option. I adore cap sleeves on my girl; they are easy to sew and the cute factor is off the charts. Size wise I went for a size 5T, and then lengthened the bodice and the hem of the skirt to a size 7. Actually the dress is still on the short side; I’ve lengthened it by 2 cm, but next time I’ll add 5 cm. But all in all, the dress fits her perfectly. Der Schnitt beinhaltet verschiedene Versionen; ich habe mich für das A-Linien Kleid mit Kappärmeln entschieden. Kappärmelchen sind erstens einfach zu nähen und zweitens einfach zuckersüss. Bei der Grösse wählte ich Grösse 5, die ich dann auf Größe 7 verlängert habe. Das Kleid fällt eher kurz aus,  weshalb ich den Rock um zwei Zentimeter verlängert habe. Bei einem nächsten Mal würde ich sogar 5 Zentimeter dazu geben. Doch insgesamt passt das Kleid perfekt. I love the bright colors of the fabric. To emphasize the colors, I added some piping to the armholes and the peter pan collar. By the way: the peter pan collar isn’t part of the pattern; I designed it myself. At the end of the post you’ll find a tutorial. Um den kecken Farbkontrast des Stoffes zu betonen, habe ich bei den Ärmeln und beim Bubikragen eine orange Paspel eingearbeitet. Den Bubikragen habe ich selber gezeichnet; der ist nicht im Schnitt beinhaltet. Am Ende des Post findest du ein Tutorial, wie du einen Bubikragen passend zu jedem Mädchenkleid erstellen kannst.  The dress closes in the back with a button. And it has to be a big button to go with the big print – in my case, it came out of granny’s treasure box. Im Rücken wird das Kleid mit einem Knopf geschlossen. Damit er bei diesem fantastischen Muster nicht verschwindet, braucht er eine gewisse Grösse. Happy Sewing Nun wartest du sicher auf das Tutorial zum Bubikragen! Hier ist es! Frohes Nähen wünsch ich dir!       Peter Pan Collar TUTORIAL: 1. Sew the back and front bodices together, open them up and lay the bodice down in front of you, put some tracing paper over the bodice and follow the curve of the neckline with a pen. 1. Nachdem ich Vorder- und Rückenteil zusammen genäht hatte, habe ich es im Bruch vor mich hingelegt, Schnittmusterpapier aufgelegt und den Halsausschnitt nachgezeichnet. 2.  Draw a second curve 5,5cm below the original neckline curve. 2. Als nächsten Schritt habe ich eine zweite Linie parallel zum Halsausschnitt im Abstand von 5,5 Zentimetern gezeichnet.     3. To round the curve nicely at the bottom, you can use a plate, a glass, or a bottle like I did. 3. Um einen schön runden Kragenabschluss zu bekommen, habe ich einen runden Gegenstand zur Hilfe genommen und damit je eine Rundung beim vorderen, wie beim hinteren Ende eingezeichnet.   4. At both ends, I used a 1 cm seam allowance, traced the pattern and cut the fabric (2 of the main fabric, 2 of the lining, 2 of the interfacing). Fuse the interfacing to the lining pieces, and sew the lining and collar pieces together, right sides together. Trim the seam allowances and notch them at the curves so they will turn smoothly. To sew the peter pan collar to the dress, you sandwich it between the dress and the lining. The dress should be on the bottom, right side facing up – the collar in the middle – and the lining should be on top, right side facing down.  Sew it together and you’re done! 4. Bei beiden Rundung habe ich je 1 cm Nahtzugabe einzeichnet. Danach habe ich das Papier ausgeschnitten um damit anschliessend den Stoff zuzuschneiden,  je zwei Mal aus Haupt-, wie aus Futterstoff und Vlieseline. Nachdem ich die Vlieseline auf den Futterstoff aufgebügelt hatte, nähte ich Haupt- und Futterstoff rechts auf rechts an der äusseren Rundung zusammen, schnitt die Nahtzugabe zurück und wendete das ganze. Um den Bubikragen ans Kleid zu befestigen wird er links auf rechts auf den Hauptstoff des Kleides festgesteckt. Dann wird der Futterstoff des Kleides rechts auf rechts darüber gelegt und der Bubikragen als Sandwich zwischen Haupt- und Futterkleid festgenäht. , Et voila: Du hast ein Kleid mit Bubikragen!
