My first wrap dress: „aime comme Mots doux“

A wrap dress! I don’t know how long I sneaked around it… It must have been years! But now finally I could chop off this point on my bucket list!

Ein Wickelkleid! Keine Ahnung wie lang ich darum herum schlich… Es müssen Jahre gewesen sein! Doch nun endlich konnte ich diesen Punkt auf meiner Bucket List abhacken.

For me, a wrap dress has something elegant, light and playful about it. I imagined a light, airy fabric to go with it. When Adlico Textile provided me with a beautiful rayon fabric from Art Gallery Fabrics, it was an omen.

Ein Wickelkleid hat für mich etwas Elegantes, Leichtes und Spielerisches in sich. Passend dazu stellte ich mir einen luftig leichten Stoff vor. Als mir dann von Adlico Textile ein wunderschöner Viskosestoff von Art Gallery Fabrics zur Verfügung gestellt wurde, war das quasi ein Omen. 

For the pattern I chose „aime comme Mots doux“ from the label „aime comme Marie„.  I liked the ruffled shoulders and the elegance of the dress. I have to admit: I feel very lady-like in it! The instructions are in French as well as in English and each step is shown in an illustration.

Beim Schnittmuster habe ich mich für „aime comme Mots doux“ vom Label „aime comme Marie“ entschieden. Mir gefielen bei diesem Schnitt die eingekräuselte Schulterpartie, sowie die Eleganz der Schnittführung.  Die Anleitung ist zwar nicht auf Deutsch, doch sowohl auf Französisch, wie auf Englisch. Dabei wird jeder Schritt in einer Illustration aufgezeigt. Der Schnitt ist daher auch nähbar, wenn die Französisch- und Englischkenntnisse nicht ganz so hoch ausfallen. 

There is a choice of three skirt lengths: Mini, Midi and Maxi. I chose the Midi length. I haven’t had a dress this long yet. So the decision was an experiment. But I’m really convinced of the result, I find the length makes super long legs, a nice side effect, right? Okay, the effect could also be related to the shoes, but who cares about such details!

Bei der Länge des Rockes besteht die Wahl zwischen drei Varianten: Mini, Midi und Maxi. Ich habe mich für die Midi Länge entschieden. Ich habe bisher noch kein einziges Kleid in dieser Länge. Der Entscheid dafür war also ein Experiment. Doch vom Ergebnis bin ich echt überzeugt, ich finde die Länge macht superlange Beine, ein netter Nebeneffekt, oder? Okay, der Effekt könnte auch mit den Schuhen zusammen hängen, aber wen interessiert schon solche Details!

A detail that I am always interested in with new patterns is how the seams are finished.  At „aime comme maire“, this tends to be rather simple. The seams are only finished with the overlock or zigzag stitch. Since I find this rather unpleasant with this light fabric, I took the effort to sew the whole dress with French seams. Now the dress has beautifully neatened seams and no overlock seams that could shine through.

Ein Detail, dass ich mich bei neuen Schnittmuster immer interessiert, ist, wie die Versäuberung gemacht wird.  Diese ist bei „aime comme maire“ tendenziell eher einfach gehalten. So werden auch beim Schnitt „aime comme mots doux“, lediglich die Ränder mit der Overlock oder Zick Zack Stich versäubert. Da ich das bei diesem leichten Stoff eher unschön finde, habe ich mir die Mühe gemacht das ganze Kleid mit französischen Nähten zu versehen. Nun hat das Kleid wunderschön versäuberte Abschlüsse und keine Overlocknähte, die durchscheinen könnten. 

Besides the way to finish the seams, I have changed a few small things on the pattern. The shoulders of the front are ruffled. Funnily enough, the facing should also be ruffled, which would make it quite bulky. That is why I have drawn the facing narrower analogous to the width of the back shoulders.

Neben der Versäuberungstechnik, habe ich noch ein paar kleine Dinge am Schnitt geändert. Die Schultern des Vorderteils sind ja gekräuselt. Lustigerweise sollte der Beleg ebenfalls gekräuselt werden, was dann doch etwas aufträgt. Deshalb habe ich den Beleg schmaler gezeichnet analog der Breite der rückwärtigen Schultern.

The instructions advise you to fix the facing in place by hand stitches. But I was simply too lazy for that. So I’ve attached the entire facing by machine. The sight now may not be as pretty as it would be with hand stitches, but the facing does not threaten to pop out.

Im weiten habe ich den gesamten Beleg per Maschine angehängt. Die Anleitung rät dazu an machen Stellen per Handstiche den Beleg zu fixieren. Doch dafür war ich schlichtweg zu faul. Der Anblick jetzt vielleicht nicht ganz so hübsch, wie er mit Handstichen ausfiele, dafür droht der Beleg nicht hervor zu blitzen. 

I can only recommend this wrap dress to you and the rayon from Art Gallery anyway, as I already wrote in an earlier blog post about my Fringe Dress made of Art Gallery rayon. This light-weight fabric is simply perfect for this pattern. Now I can hardly wait for the warm days and hope that the Weather Frog will soon be forecasting summer temperatures.

Insgesamt kann ich euch dieses Wickelkleid nur ans Herz legen und die Viskose von Art Gallery sowieso, wie ich bereits in meinen Blogpost zu meinem Fringe Dress aus Art Gallery Viskose schrieb. Der leichtfallende Stoff ist ideal für diesen Schnitt. Nun mag ich die warmen Tage kaum mehr erwarten und hoffe, dass der Wetterfrosch in Bälde sommerliche Temperaturen voraussagt.

P.S. By the way: Sorry for presenting faded flowers… I managed to leave the bouquet in the bike trailer for two hours in the baking heat. Somehow the flowers were not quite so enthusiastic about sunbathing. But because they are so color-matched to the dress, I thought they were allowed on the picture despite their tired form. P.P.S: Übrigens: Sorry, das ich euch so lampige Blumen präsentiere… Ich habe es hingekriegt, den Strauss für zwei Stunden bei brütender Hitze im Velo Anhänger zu lassen. Irgendwie waren die Blumen nicht ganz so begeistert vom Sonnenbad. Aber weil sie farblich so gut passen, fand ich sie dürfen trotz müder Form aufs Bild.
